About the museum
The Kurnikova hiša (Kurnik House) is the oldest house in Tržič and a valuable witness to the past way of life of the people of Tržič. The poet and collector of folk tradition Vojteh Kurnik was born here in 1826. It stands on the left bank of the Tržiška Bistrica in the town centre. It was built at the end of the 18th century, and after the fire of 1811, which destroyed part of Tržič, it was restored. Several generations of wheelwrights lived in it, the last being the seamstress Marija Kurnik.
The building is partly of masonry, with a wooden upper floor, a gallery and two preserved black kitchens on the ground and upper floors. The roof is covered with short shingles called šinklni, which were once typical of most of Gorenjska. Behind the house is the gank'l, a small enclosed garden.
Today the house is managed by the Tržiški muzej (Tržič Museum). The exhibition on the ground floor shows the domestic culture of the people of Tržič from the second half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, with a black and a white kitchen, a storeroom, a best room and a day room; one room is devoted to the life and work of Vojteh Kurnik. On the upper floor is the permanent exhibition on wheelwrighting, which flourished in Tržič because of the goods route across Ljubelj.
