About the museum
The Koroška galerija likovnih umetnosti (KGLU, Carinthian Gallery of Fine Arts) was founded in 1957 as the Umetnostni paviljon (Art Pavilion). The initiative came from members of the so-called Akademska grupa (Academic Group), among them the architects Marjan Gnamuš and Mirko Zdovc, the philologist Primož Simoniti and the painter Karel Pečko, who led the gallery until 1997. With the formation of its collection the institution quickly developed from a gallery into a museum.
As early as the 1960s it held international exhibitions. For the large exhibition of 1966 the gallery was extended and a new exhibition pavilion was built. Four large international exhibitions under the auspices of the United Nations (1966, 1975, 1979 and 1985) made an important contribution to the identity of Slovenj Gradec, which in 1989 received the title Glasnik miru Združenih narodov (Messenger of Peace of the United Nations).
Today the collection comprises more than 3,000 works by domestic and foreign artists. Special groups are the collection of works by Jože Tisnikar, with the supplementary collection Poklon Tisnikarju (Homage to Tisnikar), and the collections of Franc Berneker, Bogdan Borčić, Valentin Oman, Štefan Planinc and Pino Poggi; a separate collection contains the international works from exhibitions under the auspices of the United Nations. The museum also runs the programme of the Galerija Ravne in the Kulturni center na Ravnah na Koroškem (Cultural Centre in Ravne na Koroškem).
