About the museum
The museum in Slovenj Gradec was founded in 1951 as the Okrajni muzej NOB (District Museum of the National Liberation Struggle). By its first fifty years of activity its content had grown beyond the Second World War period; in 1981 it received regional status, and in 1991 it was transformed into a general museum. In the 1990s an archaeological and an ethnological department were established.
In June 2002 twelve municipalities of the Koroška region founded the Koroški pokrajinski muzej (Carinthian Regional Museum) by decree, into which the then Slovenj Gradec museum and the Koroški muzej Ravne na Koroškem were merged. Today the museum has four units; the Muzej Slovenj Gradec is its seat and houses the central exhibitions at Glavni trg 24.
Among the collections the Sokličeva zbirka (Soklič Collection) stands out. The priest Jakob Soklič (1893–1972) had already opened his collection to the public in 1937 in the town presbytery, as the Sokličev muzej (Soklič Museum), and he is therefore the first museum founder in Slovenj Gradec. The collection comprises more than 1,800 objects, including archaeological, ethnological and numismatic items, older and contemporary art, objects from South-East Asia, an African collection and a corner dedicated to Hugo Wolf. Alongside it is a library of about 6,000 units, which Soklič inherited from Franc Ksaver Meško.
The museum also includes the Rojstna hiša Huga Wolfa (Hugo Wolf Birthplace), a collection on the ensemble Štirje kovači (The Four Blacksmiths), the Levovnik shoemaker’s workshop and the church of St George on Legen.
