About the museum
In the birthplace of the composer Hugo Wolf (born 13 March 1860) the Glasbena šola Slovenj Gradec (Slovenj Gradec Music School) operated until its renovation in 2010–2011. Today the building is a memorial museum, which also houses the Mednarodni informacijsko dokumentacijski center Hugo Wolf (International Information and Documentation Centre Hugo Wolf).
The memorial exhibition is set up in a bourgeois living environment of the late 19th century. It presents Wolf’s life and work through all the periods of his intense and tragic life, especially his childhood in Slovenj Gradec and the circumstances of life in his native town and family. The composer spent most of his life in Austria, in Graz, St Paul and Vienna, where he died in 1903.
On the ground floor is the documentation centre with a central archive on Wolf, which functions as an international hub for the Hugo Wolf societies around the world. The building also houses a library with a reading room and a small audio-video hall, and on the upper floor a small concert hall. The programme promoting the composer’s life and work, including the concert cycle “Wolf povezuje” (Wolf Connects) and the International Solo Singing School, is coordinated by the Društvo Hugo Wolf Slovenj Gradec (Hugo Wolf Society Slovenj Gradec).
