About the museum
Prežihova bajta (Prežih’s Cottage) lies against the sunny slope of Preški vrh, from where there is a fine view over Kotlje and the whole Hotuljska kotlina (Hotuljska basin). Since 1979 it has been the memorial museum of the Slovene writer Lovro Kuhar – Prežihov Voranc (1893–1950). The cottage represents the typical Carinthian building of the small farmer, the bajtler, with a black kitchen; its exterior and interior arrangement show the rural and working-class environment from which Voranc and many characters of his works came.
In 2008 the Občina Ravne na Koroškem (Municipality of Ravne na Koroškem) renewed the roof, deepened the cellar rooms and built a new path to the cottage. In the cellar there is a permanent exhibition on the events and celebrations held at the cottage during the thirty years of the museum’s existence. In 2010 the Kravperška kašča (Kravper granary) was moved to the northern part of the courtyard; between the cottage and the granary lies a gartl (kitchen garden) with vegetables, herbs and spices.
The surroundings are graced by an old meadow orchard, which since 2017 has been rejuvenated with the help of the Sadjarsko društvo Mežiške doline (Mežica Valley Fruit-Growers’ Society); old varieties of apples and perry pears have been planted.
