About the museum
The Mestni muzej Litija (Litija Town Museum) operates within the Litija Institute for Culture, Youth and Sport (Zavod za kulturo, mladino in šport Litija). Its permanent exhibitions tell of the economic and transport past of the town on the River Sava and its surroundings.
The exhibition on the history of navigation on the Sava shows that Litija was an important river port until the middle of the 19th century, with its own shipping office, toll station and customs house. On display are scale models of river craft that sailed on the Sava and the Ljubljanica, and original tools for boat building.
The exhibition on the Sitarjevec mine, one of the oldest Slovenian mines, deals with mining in the area of the town; the first attempts go back to the Iron Age, and in the Austro-Hungarian period Sitarjevec was the second-largest lead mine in Europe. The exhibition on the Southern Railway recalls the line from 1849, which had a strong influence on the development of Litija, while the exhibition on the Litija wooden bridge from 1855, which stood until 1974, keeps among its objects the only surviving wooden beam of the bridge.
