About the museum
The first museum exhibition was on view in 1983 in two rooms of the Old Prelature in Stična, prepared under the direction of Abbot Anton Nadrah. In 2006 the museum received the status of a national museum and its present name.
The museum occupies rooms in the Cistercian Abbey of Stična, namely the Renaissance Old Prelature and part of the Baroque building by the stream. The monastery, the only still-active Cistercian monastery in Slovenia, dates back to 1132; in its library the Stična Manuscript of 1428 was created, one of the earliest written monuments in Slovene.
The permanent exhibitions developed gradually: the extensive exhibition The History of Christianity in Slovenia has been on view since 2002, Life behind Monastery Walls since 2006, and The Mysterious World of Medieval Scribes since 2020. The museum also prepares educational programmes, workshops and temporary exhibitions.
