Jurčičeva domačija

Homestead in Muljava where writer Josip Jurčič was born; open-air museum with experience tours “Čebelnjak zgodb”.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

In Muljava stands the homestead where Josip Jurčič (1844–1881), the first Slovenian novelist and newspaper revolutionary, was born. The homestead was one of the few houses with books for miles around; little Jožek listened here to the stories his grandfather told him from atop the bread oven.

Today the homestead is run by the Javni zavod za kulturo in turizem Prijetno domače Ivančna Gorica (public institute for culture and tourism). Visitors can explore the open-air museum with the experience tour “Čebelnjak zgodb”, in which they meet the heroes of Jurčič's works through play, and the family detective trail “Čebelnjak zgodb v naravi” along the Jurčič Trail from the homestead to the source of the Krka.

Educational programmes for kindergartens and schools supplement the curriculum and use experiential methods, including visits to the homestead with kamišibai (Japanese picture-story theatre).
