About the museum
The Remšnik area has a geological speciality: a long ridge or thrust with an exceptional variety of rocks and minerals. The first research began in the 18th century. In 1850 the silver-bearing lead, copper and zinc mine Dravski gozd was opened, later called Rudnik Brezno; the last excavations took place in 1934. At Brezni Vrh, a graphite mine was opened in 1870 and worked until 1964.
Up to 2021, 66 mineral species had been researched and described in the Remšnik mining area, including rare ones that give the place significance on a world scale. The museum is set up in the premises of the Krajevna skupnost Remšnik (Remšnik local community). Visitors can view the minerals with the naked eye, under a magnifying glass and under a microscope; among them are beaverite, brianyoungite, carbonate cyanotrichite, langite, linarite and posnjakite.
The author of the collection is Zmago Žorž, who has been carrying out research for more than thirty years. Together with the Graz mineralogist Dr Bernd Moser, he published a bilingual book on Remšnik in 2002. The museum is also the starting point of the international geological trail Oberhaag–Remšnik, about nine kilometres long.
