About the museum
The museum was founded in 1973. It is housed on the ground floor of the municipal building at Glavni trg 17, in the former Kienhofen manor, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century by Žiga Dietrichstein. In 1899 the manor was bought by the St Cyril and Methodius Society (Družba sv. Cirila in Metoda), which opened a school in it the following year.
Around 650 objects, collected mainly in the Muta municipality, are displayed in four collections: forging and foundry, ethnology, firefighting and cultural history. The forging and foundry collection, with archival documents, photographs, tools and products, shows the history of ironworking and forging; it is complemented by an open-air museum in front of the building, with a winch, a crane, a water hammer (repač) and a saw.
The firefighting collection has 139 exhibits; the oldest is a hand-operated piston pump from 1876. The cultural history collection shows schooling, wind band music, the choir and associations in Muta at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The museum department is run by the Koroška Regional Museum (Koroški pokrajinski muzej).
