About the museum
On the first floor of the Vuzenica presbytery, a memorial museum presents in images and words the period from 1838 to 1844, when the Blessed Anton Martin Slomšek served as dean and parish priest in Vuzenica and as district school inspector. He arrived in Vuzenica on 27 October 1838, after the German-speaking authorities had placed him under supervision for advocating the use of Slovene in lessons.
During these years Slomšek extended the presbytery, renovated the presbytery building and the churches at Primož and at Kamen (Our Lady of Kamen), and blessed the new cemetery. The library room, furnished with original objects in a period setting, contains Slomšek's writing desk and bed. The most ambitious room, the former bishop's room, has a painted Baroque wooden ceiling from 1653, the Vuzenica ceiling.
It was in Vuzenica that Slomšek also developed his literary work; the book “Mnemosynon Slavicum – Spomin slovenski” was published here, and his best-known work is the educational manual “Blaže in Nežica v nedeljski šoli”. The space has been partly refurbished and is also used for chamber cultural events.
