Planšarski muzej

Museum of alpine dairy farming and cheese-making in a former village cheese dairy in Stara Fužina in Bohinj.

Opening hoursAdmission €3.50

About the museum

The Planšarski muzej (Alpine Dairy Museum) in Stara Fužina was opened in 1971 and reorganised and expanded in content in 1990. It is housed in a disused village cheese dairy. The dairy was built in Stara Fužina in 1883, and cheese was made there until 1967; the cheese masters took care of the large cheese wheels during the summer, which porters brought down from the mountain pastures every week.

The original cheese-making workshop has been preserved, with two large built-in cheese kettles and a press for shaping the cheese wheels. The original cheese-making tools and equipment, as well as the objects used by herders at work on the mountain pasture, are on display. A wooden herders’ hut with its interior furnishings from the Zajamniki mountain pasture, dating from 1849, can also be seen.

The history of Alpine herding in Bohinj, the life of the herders, cheese-making work on the mountain pastures, the transport of cheese down to the valley and the typical Bohinj herding settlements and buildings are presented in an authentic setting with objects, photographic and documentary material. The museum is run by the Gorenjski muzej.
