Muzej tovorništva in prevozništva

Museum in the renovated medieval customs house (mitnica) in Senožeče about packhorse drivers, carters, toll keepers and craftsmen along the route between the interior of Europe and the Adriatic.

Opening hoursAdmission €7 Café

About the museum

The museum operates in the renovated medieval mitnica (customs house) in Senožeče, one of the few surviving customs houses in Slovenia. The customs house stood on the main trade route between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea, so the museum tells the story of the movement of people, goods and stories through the centuries.

The display presents the development of packhorse and carrier transport, the lives of rural merchants, carters, smugglers and craftsmen, and the history of the customs houses and of the local inhabitants who helped shape this place. Visitors see, among other things, the customs regulations of 1524, an interactive map of the historical routes, original tools of Senožeče craftsmen and a digital insight into farmsteads from two hundred years ago; play and learning corners are prepared for children.

The museum is complemented by the Djestence forest educational trail and a visit to the mausoleums of the Garzarolli and Dejak families at the parish church. Next to the museum, in the Kotlarjeva hiša (Kotlar House), there is a museum café with confectionery.
