About the museum
Predjama Castle stands in a recess of a 123-metre-high vertical rock face and is considered the largest cave castle in the world. It has existed for more than 800 years. It is linked to the legend of the knight Erazem Predjamski (Erasmus of Predjama), who is said to have defied a siege by imperial troops for more than a year until a servant betrayed him. Within the rock behind the castle lies a network of passages which, according to the legend, gave the knight secret routes out.
Visitors can see the armoury, the chapel, the kitchen and the torture chamber; the knight's room is the most richly furnished. The dining hall shows court life in the late Gothic period, and in the Renaissance hall on the third floor are the hunting trophies of the castle's last owner, Prince Windischgrätz. In the attic is a collection of medieval weapons and armour, including spears, halberds, swords, hammers, bows and crossbows.
Below the castle lies the four-storey Jama pod Predjamskim gradom (Cave below Predjama Castle), the second-longest cave in Slovenia. Part of the cave is open to visitors in summer; it is home to a colony of bats and is therefore closed during their winter hibernation.
