About the museum
Next to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians at Brezje stands a modern museum of nativity scenes, which is open all year. Visitors stroll through the history of nativity-scene making, learn about the meaning of individual figures and scenes, and the various methods and materials used to make nativity scenes.
The first part presents the history of nativity scenes, the tools for making them and the different types of nativity scenes. Besides Christmas nativity scenes, the second room contains Passion, Pentecost and Resurrection nativity scenes, and traditional Slovenian nativity scenes like those once set up in the corner of the house (Bogkov kot).
The continuation of the museum presents numerous Slovenian makers of nativity scenes and nativity scenes from other European countries and other continents. A new section contains spaces for larger independent spatial nativity displays, and a film story about nativity scenes in war and in the present day. The exhibition ends with a reproduction of the fresco from Greccio, the first nativity scene of St Francis of Assisi, illuminated through a perforated brick screen. More than 500 nativity scenes are on display.
