About the museum

The permanent exhibition of the Mestni muzej Radovljica (Radovljica Town Museum) presents the Enlightenment 18th century, when great changes took place in Carniola. Its central figure is the Radovljica native Anton Tomaž Linhart (1756–1795), the father of Slovenian theatre and the pioneer of Slovenian scholarly historiography.

Linhart is credited with founding primary schools. In 1789 he laid the foundations of Slovenian theatre with the staging of the comedy “Županova Micka” (The Mayor’s Micka), and in 1788 he published the first part of the “Attempt at a History of Carniola and of the Other Lands of the South Slavs of Austria”. The exhibition presents information on the Enlightenment and Linhart’s rebellious spirit in an easy-going way; the texts are in Slovenian and English.

The museum operates within the Radovljica Municipality Museums (Muzeji radovljiške občine) on Linhartov trg; a combined ticket links it with the Čebelarski muzej (Beekeeping Museum).
