About the museum
Novakova domačija with its mill stands in Smrje by the Reka river and bears witness to the life of ancestors in the Reka valley. The house beside the mill was built in 1856; the mill and sawmill were built even earlier. Because of frequent floods the house is set somewhat back from the riverbed. The building has one storey, is built of flysch stone and is extended into an outbuilding.
The mill, one of the few well-preserved mills in the Ilirska Bistrica area, stands near the riverbed, and a channel called the mlinščica leads to it, in which the water could be regulated. On the other side of the channel a sawmill once stood, which no longer exists. The estate, 14 hectares in size, provided its owners with an income from farming and milling.
Today the farmstead is run by the Dovgan family. By prior arrangement visitors can see the black kitchen, the mill and the farmstead; for larger groups a guided tour of the ethnological collection is organised. The farmstead is also a place for picnics and outdoor weddings.
