About the museum
The Vojni muzej Logatec (Logatec Military Museum) opened in June 1998. It grew out of a collection of military objects that Janez J. Švajncer had been gathering since 1955. Because of limited space, only the most important part of the collection is shown in display cabinets. It covers objects from the Stone and Copper Ages and the Roman period, through the Middle Ages and the Napoleonic Wars, to both World Wars, the Ten-Day War for Slovenia in 1991 and the development of the Slovenian army.
A European speciality is the collection of more than 2,800 decorations from various countries of the world. Among the First World War items are more than 700 Austro-Hungarian unit insignia, battlefield and patriotic motifs, and among the shells there is also a 305 mm shell that was pulled out of the Soča in 1999. A special unit is the display on the Ten-Day War for Slovenia in 1991.
The museum is officially registered and operates with the permission of the Ministry of Culture. It is known above all for its research and publishing activity: it has published more than eighty professional books and issues the Vojnozgodovinski zbornik (military-history proceedings) twice a year. An important part of the collection also consists of ethnological objects, such as old beehive end-boards (panjske končnice), antique clocks, farmers' chests and devotional medals (svetinjice), as well as an extensive military-history library.
