About the museum

At Klanec 1 in the centre of Vrhnika stands the Cankar memorial house, an important cultural monument. It stands on the site of the wooden, thatched cottage in which Ivan Cankar (1876–1918), the greatest Slovenian writer and dramatist, was born. The cottage burned down in 1879, so the Cankar family had to live in disused stables and houses around Vrhnika.

The new owners rebuilt the building in 1880 and gave it the appearance it has today. The interior consists of a living area, a room (izba) and a black kitchen.

In the house, visitors see under the guidance of a guide a collection of objects that shows the living conditions of a poorer family at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. On the shelves and in the display cases are Cankar's first editions, photographs of the writer and of his relatives, friends and benefactors from the Ljubljana and Vienna periods, and his self-portraits and drawings.
