About the museum
The Museo del Bandolero was founded by Jesús Almazán González and opened its doors on 7 May 1995 in a typical house in the historic centre of Ronda. It was a private initiative that aimed to fill the gap in knowledge about a phenomenon as mythologised as banditry.
In September 2020 El Borge town council acquired the museum's holdings for the municipality, where one of the most feared bandits of his time was born: Luis Muñoz “el Bizco Arboge”. The collection was renamed Galería del Bandolero and installed in a newly refurbished building beside the road linking El Borge with Cútar, which opened in February 2023.
The gallery holds 1,390 objects, including books, weapons, documents, costumes, engravings, lithographs, official seals, period press, photographs, oil paintings, watercolours and comics. The display is organised into five thematic areas covering the bandits themselves, the Romantic travellers who spread their image, the Civil Guard who pursued them, and the myths and legends that surrounded them.
