About the museum
The Museo Lara arose from the private initiative of Juan Antonio Lara Jurado, who devoted his life to assembling the collection. It presents itself as the first private museum in Andalusia and occupies an 18th-century palace house in Ronda's old town, next to the Tajo gorge, which once belonged to the counts of the Conquista de las Islas Batanes.
According to the museum itself, it is laid out in twelve rooms with more than two thousand pieces. These include a museum of clocks from the 18th and 19th centuries, a museum of weapons from the same centuries, a museum of photography and film, the chapel of Fray Leopoldo de Alpandeire, a museum of scientific instruments and a Romantic museum.
The route also includes a central courtyard, a Flemish-style re-creation with an 18th-century wine cellar, an archaeological museum, a forge room and exhibitions on the Inquisition and witchcraft. The website offers a 3D virtual visit, and audio guides in Spanish, English, French and German are available in the museum.
