About the museum
The Museo Fundación Unicaja Joaquín Peinado opened on 11 July 2001 to preserve, study and disseminate the work of the painter Joaquín Peinado, who was born in Ronda. It belongs to the Fundación Unicaja and has become a cultural landmark for the city and the province of Málaga.
It occupies the Palacio de los Marqueses de Moctezuma in Ronda's old town, a building that retains elements from the 16th to the 19th centuries, such as a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling and the former neo-Gothic chapel of the Escuelas de Santa Teresa. The exhibition is spread over two floors and follows a chronological and thematic approach, except in the Salón Mudéjar, a noble room that houses works of particular historical and artistic value.
The collection brings together oils and drawings by Peinado, many of them research studies or preparatory works for well-known canvases. Since 30 October 2012, 49 original works by Pablo Picasso from the exhibition “Picasso. Ceramista y grabador” (Picasso: Ceramicist and Printmaker), with a representative selection from the Vollard Suite, have formed part of the permanent collection.
