About the museum
The museum occupies the Casa de las Cadenas, a Baroque building rebuilt in the 18th century and later converted into a cultural centre. Its name refers to the “privilegio de cadenas” (privilege of chains), which allowed the house to be surrounded with chains and offered temporary refuge to anyone who entered it. The house belonged to the Molleja-Salcedo family; around 1731 the Infante Carlos spent the night there, and Philip V later granted the privilege. It then passed by marriage to the counts of Colchado, who kept it until 1913.
Today the Museo Histórico Municipal has several permanent rooms devoted to the painters Pedro Bueno, Blas Moyano and Ginés Liébana, as well as the Beppo-Abdul room, with watercolours and drawings by an Anglo-Tunisian couple and a drawing by Modigliani. The museum also includes an archaeology room with pieces of historical value.
The ground floor is used for temporary exhibitions. The Casa de las Cadenas is the venue for the “Pedro Bueno” National Painting Award and the “Manolete” National Contemporary Painting Award, and it hosts the Villa del Río Art Biennial.
