About the museum

The museum is housed in the former municipal granary (pósito), an 18th-century building beside the town hall, on the Plaza Mayor of Bujalance. Its approach is educational: through objects, fossils, reconstructions, models, photographs and drawings, it explains how the different cultures that inhabited the area lived and how they related to their natural environment.

The collections come from donations by private individuals and from archaeological excavations carried out in the municipality. They are presented in display cases following a chronological sequence, from the Palaeolithic and Chalcolithic to the Iberian period, with grave goods and fibulae, and to Roman culture, with pottery, medical instruments, oil lamps, amulets and mosaic fragments. Other cases bring together Visigothic and Islamic remains and, at the end, pieces from the early modern and contemporary periods, such as coins, banknotes and objects from the Spanish Civil War.

The municipal tourism website now presents this collection as the Museo Arqueológico “Ciudad de Bujalance”, integrated into the Castillo Alcazaba Interpretation Centre.
