About the museum
The Casa del Agua is a museum space that explains the uses of water throughout history and today, and serves as a starting point for understanding the hydraulic tradition of the municipality of Taramundi. It explains how the water-powered mills and workshops that can be visited in the area work, such as the ethnographic complex of Os Teixóis or the mills museum of Mazonovo.
The exhibition is organised in two sections, water as motive power and water as raw material, located respectively on the ground floor and the upper floor. Models of water-powered machinery from the area and from other parts of the world (mill, water saw, forge, water wheel), several clepsydras or water clocks, panels and reconstructions show the use of water for drinking, irrigation and measuring time, as well as its present-day uses and the effects of climate change. In the central void between the floors there is a full-scale machine that explains how hydraulic motors and lifts work.
The building was a rural school opened in 1930 thanks to contributions from emigrants from Bres in Argentina, and it functioned as a school until the 1990s. The name “Escuela Hispano-Argentina de Comercio” is preserved on the façade, and inside there is a small reconstruction of an old classroom.
