About the museum

The Colección del Museo Ruso / Málaga opened on 25 March 2015 as the first European branch of the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. It occupies the former Royal Tobacco Factory of Málaga, known as La Tabacalera, in the Carretera de Cádiz district, next to the Misericordia beach.

The centre had no collection of its own: it showed works lent by Russia for periods of one year or six months, under an agreement signed in 2014. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the collection returned to Russia in May of that year, at the close of the last exhibition.

Málaga City Council keeps the museum open with exhibitions of private collections. It is run by the Agencia Pública para la Gestión de la Casa Natal de Pablo Ruiz Picasso y Otros Equipamientos Museísticos y Culturales, which also looks after the Centre Pompidou Málaga and the MUCAC. Alongside its exhibition programme, the centre runs a wide education and outreach programme for adults, families and the school community.
