About the museum
The museum, the oldest of the city's private museums, has its roots in the 1960s, when an ethnographic section was conceived alongside the Museo de Bellas Artes (1961). The first material was placed in premises ceded by the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, in the former building of the Montepío de Viñeros.
In 1974 the purchase of the Mesón de la Victoria was completed. It is a 17th-century building that had been abandoned and was in ruins, and it was restored to become a museum. It opened on 23 October 1976. The mesón was chosen because the building itself, a former inn with a wine cellar, refers to the contents: the everyday life of Málaga and its province.
The 18 rooms are spread over two floors. The lower floor houses rural settings and craft workshops, and the upper floor the world of the 19th-century bourgeoisie. Highlights include the collection of barros malagueños (Málaga earthenware), ceramics, textiles, ironwork, goldsmithing, popular religious objects and printing equipment. The museum also holds the Archivo Díaz de Escovar.
