About the museum
The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Málaga) opened in 2003 on the initiative of the city council to promote the visual arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. It occupied the former Mayoristas wholesale market, a Rationalist building designed by Luis Gutiérrez Soto and built between 1939 and 1944, declared an asset of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural), with about 6,000 m². Its permanent collection comprised more than 400 works, including pieces by artists such as Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois and Anish Kapoor.
The centre closed in September 2024, when the outsourced management contract ended. The city council then created the Museo Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (MUCAC), under direct public management, which combines the activity of the CAC and the Museo del Patrimonio Municipal (MUPAM) in two venues: La Coracha, reopened in April 2025 on the Paseo de Reding, and Mayoristas, on calle Alemania.
The Mayoristas venue remains temporarily closed. At the end of 2025 the works to correct roof leaks and drainage problems were awarded, and the project provides for four exhibition rooms, artists' workshops, a bookshop and a catering service. The museum's website does not give a reopening date.
