About the museum

The Casa-Museo de los Caballos del Vino occupies a fully restored 18th-century Baroque stately house that belonged to the Muso Melgarejo family. It is located in the old town of Caravaca de la Cruz, near the Plaza de los Caballos del Vino.

Several rooms and audiovisual presentations trace the origins and the current situation of the festival: the decorated horses, the design and embroidery of the mantos (embroidered horse cloths), the pieces of the trappings and the race. The museum also explains how the trappings changed over the course of the 20th century and dedicates a space to the child ponies and riders who parade on 3 May.

The festival is held around 2 May as part of the Santísima y Vera Cruz celebrations and was inscribed on the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020.
