About the museum

The Museo Carrilero is devoted to the work of the Caravaca-born sculptor José Carrilero and is located on the square that bears his name. It occupies the rear part and the vaults of a palacete built in the second quarter of the 17th century by Luis de Gadea Sahajosa, a councillor of Caravaca. In the 18th and 19th centuries it belonged to a branch of the Muñoz de Otálora family and to their heirs, the marquises of San Mamés de Arás; later it passed to other owners, and for a time in the 20th century it was rented out as a Guardia Civil barracks. It was the artist's birthplace.

The museum responds to the sculptor's wish that his work, scattered for a time across several cities, should be exhibited permanently in his native town. It covers about 650 m² and holds 90 works among sculptures, paintings and medals, spread across four exhibition rooms, a multi-purpose room and facilities.

The upper floors show a representative selection of his painting, with sketches and figurative designs that later became sculptures. The basement, formed by old vaulted cellars, holds almost all the sculptural work, with 49 bronzes of various sizes and 14 medals sculpted and engraved. On the square and on the façade there are three life-size musicians.
