About the museum

The Museo de la Santísima y Vera Cruz is in the Casa del Capellán (Chaplain's House), within the complex of the castle and the Basílica-Santuario de la Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz. Its core collection comes from the former Museum of Sacred Art and History of the Vera Cruz.

It has three rooms devoted to the history of the Holy Relic, to liturgical furnishings and to the archaeology of the Sanctuary. The picture gallery brings together six 16th-century oil paintings on panel by Hernando de los Llanos, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, four of which narrate the miracle of the Apparition of the Cross.

Among the goldsmiths' work, the Custodia-Ostensorio de la Cruz (monstrance) of the early 16th century stands out, along with the Portacruz de los Baños (cross stand), a gift from the 2nd Marquis of Vélez, and a gilt silver case donated at the end of the 14th century by Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa, Master of the Order of Santiago. The Casulla de Chirinos (Chirinos chasuble), a Muslim tiraz textile adapted as a liturgical vestment, is also on display. Visitors can also walk part of the excavated layout of the old castle, including a dungeon.
