About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico de La Soledad occupies the former church of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, on the Cuesta del Castillo, in the heart of the historic centre of Caravaca de la Cruz. It was the first parish founded in the town. It is a valuable Renaissance building, erected in the second third of the 16th century on the site of the former medieval hermitage of El Salvador.

The museum runs chronologically through the great cultural periods, from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic to the Chalcolithic, the Argaric culture, the Iberian period, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. It combines archaeological pieces with interactive modules that explain how the area's ancestors lived.

The collection comes mainly from excavations at sites in Caravaca, especially the Iberian-Roman complex of La Encarnación, and includes ceramics, weapons, coins and architectural elements.
