About the museum

The Casa-Museo Julián Gayarre occupies the building that the tenor from Roncal had built in 1879 on the site of his birthplace. His family lived there, while Gayarre spent his holidays in it. The museum opened in Roncal on 2 January 1990, coinciding with the centenary of his death. The opening was made possible by the donation of the tenor's heirs, who together with Roncal town council and the Government of Navarre founded the Fundación Julián Gayarre, responsible for gathering the objects and organising the permanent exhibition.

The collection is the largest held in Navarre on the first tenor of international renown of the 19th century. It includes photographs, decorations, appointments, libretti, scores, press reviews, personal objects and costumes and accessories used in his performances. The restoration of around fifty pieces, among them the costumes for “Lucrecia de Borgia”, “La Favorita”, “El Trovador” and “Rigoletto”, was carried out by the ERCOA collective on commission from the Government of Navarre. The museum also keeps a press archive and documentation on Gayarre and the world of opera, which continues to grow thanks to donations.

The route follows the three floors of the house. On the ground floor, panels place the tenor in his time, and large display cases show his life and singular objects such as a billiard table, a bicycle and a calesa (carriage). The first floor displays the costumes and the gifts received, and the second floor keeps his bedroom, a room with the piano and the singer's larynx. In Roncal cemetery there is also the mausoleum dedicated to him by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure.
