About the museum
The Museo Histórico Municipal is an archaeological museum founded in 1983 and a pioneer among the museums of Priego de Córdoba. Its current location in the Centro Cultural Adolfo Lozano Sidro is temporary: a move to a permanent site in the Molino de los Montoro, very close to the castle, is planned. The Servicio Municipal de Arqueología (Municipal Archaeology Service), which has managed the city's archaeological heritage since 1989, is also based in the museum.
The collections are very extensive, although only a small part is on display. They come from the museum's own excavations in the town and the surrounding area, and from donations of private collections, mainly prehistoric and medieval material. An ethnography section based on the Marcos Campos collection is planned for the future.
The visitable part was last refurbished in 2005–2006 and follows a chronological order from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, across four rooms and a columned courtyard. Highlights include remains of fauna from the Cueva del Grajo II, a group of Roman anthropomorphic terracottas found in the town, unique in Hispania, and a Visigothic inscription with the beginning of a psalm.
