About the museum
The Museo Adolfo Lozano Sidro opened to the public in 1999 in the house of the Calvo Lozano family, where the painter stayed during his visits to Priego de Córdoba. The town council received the property as a donation in 1985 and in 1994 set up a municipal board of trustees (patronato) to manage it. An agreement was also signed with the artist’s heirs, the Fernández Lozano brothers, to complete the legacy of works and objects.
Adolfo Lozano Sidro (Priego de Córdoba, 1872 – 1935) studied in Málaga with José Moreno Carbonero and began his career as a painter in Granada, as a member of the Cofradía del Avellano. From 1893 he lived in Madrid, where he worked as an illustrator for the magazine “Blanco y Negro” and other publications, and he is today considered one of the great Spanish illustrators of the 20th century. He cultivated mainly costumbrismo (scenes of customs and everyday life) and painted numerous portraits.
The museum occupies the first and second floors of the house and brings together more than 70 original works, a large collection of drawings and sketches, and objects the painter used in his work. On the first floor are portraits, works on Orientalist and religious themes, and popular scenes of rural Andalusia in the early 20th century, set against scenes of Madrid’s high society. The Sala Museo ABC displays original illustrations loaned by the Fundación Colección ABC. On the second floor is the painter’s apartment with his studio, arranged much as it was when the artist died.
