About the museum
The museum grew out of an exhibition organised by local residents in 1985, with archaeological pieces from private collections and local finds. In 2003 the Town Council began shaping the museum and seeking funding to expand its holdings. In 2005 the archaeologist Antonio Moreno de la Rosa drew up the museum project; the museum was entered in the Andalusian Museums Register and opened provisionally in 2007.
It is housed in the former Escuelas del Pilarejo, on Calle Postigos, so that the visit invites visitors to “relive their school childhood”. Its rooms show the palaeontological, archaeological, historical, artistic and ethnographic heritage of a municipality with continuous settlement from prehistory to the present day. In 2016 the collection had 1,216 catalogued pieces, most of them from private donations.
