About the museum
The Museo Etnolóxico de Ribadavia is a state-owned museum whose management was transferred to the Xunta de Galicia. It was founded on the initiative of Manuel Chamoso Lamas under the name Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares. For years it operated as the Ethnographic Section of the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Ourense, opened to the public permanently in 1986, and in 1993 the Xunta established it as a museum in its own right.
Its seat is the Pazo de Baamonde, on the Rúa de Santiago. The building was bought in 1908 by José María Martínez Vázquez, who devoted it to a charitable and educational foundation, and between 1917 and 1950 it housed several schools. In 1950 it passed to the Ribadavia town council, which used it for various activities. The building had been ceded to the State in 1967 to house the museum, and it was adapted between 1970 and 1980.
The collections bring together ethnographic holdings, both objects and documents, that show the changes in rural life and in the towns of Galicia. The costume, pottery, river fishing and carpentry collections stand out, along with the photographic holdings and the oral archive.
