About the museum
The Casa do Cuadrante is a traditional two-storey Galician pazo with an L-shaped plan, featuring a patín and solana, in the centre of Vilanova de Arousa. Originally it formed part of the town's Benedictine priory. It later belonged to the Peña family and passed to the maternal grandparents of Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Francisco de la Peña Cardecid and Josefa Montenegro y Saco Bolaño. Ramón José Simón Valle Peña, who would become famous as a writer under the name Valle-Inclán, was born here in 1866. Royal Decree 249/1976 declared the building a National Historic-Artistic Monument.
The house was lived in until the 1990s. In 1994 a fire destroyed much of the interior and the following year Vilanova de Arousa town council bought the building to restore it and turn it into a museum. After restoration, the house museum opened to the public in May 2002.
On the ground floor, in the former stables, there is a permanent exhibition with panels on the life and work of the writer, first editions and copies of his books, original manuscripts and documents linking his family to Vilanova. The noble floor recreates a mid-19th-century Galician middle-class home, furnished with period pieces. The visit includes a screening of an excerpt from the silent film “La malcasada”, and in the garden, with camellias and a large magnolia, concerts, poetry evenings and theatre performances are held.
