About the museum

The Museo de Arte de Almería is a municipal institution that brings together art made in Almería and by artists from Almería from the late 19th century to the present day. The works come from the municipal collections and, above all, from the Fundación de Arte Ibáñez Cosentino, which artistically directs both venues.

The first, the Museo de Arte Doña Pakyta, occupies a Nordic-style chalet built from 1928 by the architect Guillermo Langle Rubio, from Almería. Its last owner, doña Francisca Díaz Torres, bequeathed it to the town council to become a cultural space; after her death in 2014 it became municipal property, and the ground and first floors were adapted as a museum. Its seven rooms cover almost a hundred years of local art, from 19th-century painting and 20th-century academicism to the Grupo Indaliano, which emerged in the late 1940s.

The second venue, Espacio 2, is a building with postmodern lines next to the town hall, conceived as a Contemporary Art Centre for temporary exhibitions. Since 2015 it has been part of the museum and presents on its ground floor a permanent collection of art from Almería from 1980 to the present, with painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography.
