About the museum

The Centro Arqueológico Saguntino is a cultural association founded in 1957 that works to protect, study and promote the historical heritage of Sagunto and its comarca. Its origins lie in a group of enthusiasts who, from the 1930s and 1940s onwards, recovered archaeological remains, and who in 1945 formed the “Peña Arqueológica”. Since 1985 it has been based in the Casa de Cultura Capellán Pallarés and publishes the journal ARSE.

In 1996 the Generalitat Valenciana granted the collection of archaeological and historical pieces held by the centre the status of Permanent Museographic Collection. A selection is displayed in the Sala de Exposiciones Nicolau Cotanda, in the Casa de Cultura itself, with its entrance on Calle Arcediano Andreu.

The display covers prehistory and the Iberian, Greek, Roman and medieval periods, as well as more recent times, and pays tribute to the local heritage recovery work the association has carried out since its foundation. Notable pieces include an inscription with the demonym “saguntino”, coins minted at Arse-Saguntum, Iberian pottery and a neo-Gothic balcony recovered in the 1970s.
