About the museum
The Museum of La Vilavella tells the local history with the Font Calda, the thermal spring, as its central thread. Its reception is in the oratory, the only original element that survives from the former Balneario del Cervellón spa, opened in 1843. The spa hotel, turned into a hospital during the Civil War, was demolished in 1943, and the baths in 1987.
The collection follows a chronological order in eight sections: prehistory, the Iberians, the Roman Empire, Al-Andalus, the feudal period, the early modern period, the bourgeoisie and spas, and the Civil War. Topics include the first Eneolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the Roman sanctuary on the Santa Bárbara mountain, the small Andalusi castle, the Christian conquest of 1238–1241 and the Risala manuscript, which recalls the village's Andalusi past.
Other sections cover the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 and the resettlement of 1611, and the rise of the spas in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the public washhouse of 1845, the railway of 1862 and eleven bathhouses in 1898. The arrival of the front line in July 1938, during the Battle of Levante, is also presented.
