About the museum
The museum began as a collection of Iberian and Roman inscriptions, popularly known as the Cuarto de les Pedres. The collection grew, and in 1952 a building next to the castle of Sagunto was adapted as a forerunner of the present museum.
Today the museum is housed in the Casa del Mestre Peña, a Gothic building probably dating from the 14th century, which served as a trading hall (lonja) and a granary (almudín). Iberian-Roman structures and an 11th-century Islamic cemetery have been found in it. The building was declared a national monument in 1962.
The rooms display archaeological pieces from the excavations carried out in the city over the years. Sagunto had already attracted historians in the 16th century, and the museum preserves that legacy.
