About the museum
La Posada del Cordón occupies a 15th-century mansion in the historic centre of Atienza, next to Plaza de España. The original Gothic portal has been preserved; the rest of the building is a modern extension, converted for museum use with funding from the Diputación de Guadalajara and European FEDER funds.
The building has two floors and about 700 square metres, of which about 400 are devoted to the exhibition. On the ground floor are the tourist office, a hall for events and exhibitions and a workshop for educational activities; the two floors are connected by a lift.
The collection brings together more than 600 objects of ethnographic value from the Diputación's holdings, the Alonso-Calleja family, the Escuela de Folklore and private donations. The permanent exhibition is organised into eight areas: identity, the natural environment and architecture, the annual cycle of festivals and rites, beliefs, the life cycle, daily life and the home, folk arts and communication, and traditional trades and economic activities.
To display them, panels, videos, interactive screens, old photographs, mannequins and maps are used. Temporary exhibitions and educational activities are also programmed throughout the year.
