About the museum
The ducal palace occupies one side of the Plaza Mayor of Medinaceli (Soria). It is a late Renaissance complex whose construction began in 1625, commissioned by the ducal house of Medinaceli. It has a horizontal façade with a central doorway and balconies topped by curved pediments; the ducal coat of arms sits in the centre of the main floor.
The building was poorly preserved. At the end of the 20th century the Renaissance courtyard was restored and now hosts much of the cultural activity, while the remaining rooms have been adapted for social uses with temporary architecture.
Today the palace is the seat of the DEARTE Foundation. It displays works from the contemporary art collection of the gallerist Miquel Tugores, around 400 works by more than 150 artists, together with a Roman mosaic of the 2nd century found in Medinaceli. From June to October it hosts film, early music, opera and zarzuela, theatre, folk and jazz festivals.
