About the museum

The name Yacimiento-Museo de Ambrona covers an area that brings together the palaeontological sites of Torralba and Ambrona, in the municipality of Miño de Medinaceli. Torralba was discovered in 1888 during the construction of the railway line to Soria and dates from the end of the Middle Pleistocene, about 250,000 years ago. In 1910, during its excavation, the Marquis of Cerralbo located the second site, Ambrona, which is around 400,000 years old.

At both places the presence of Homo heidelbergensis has been documented thanks to Acheulean tools such as handaxes and cleavers, used to hunt medium-sized animals, including deer and aurochs, or to butcher larger ones. Among the latter, the ancient elephant (Elephas antiquus) stands out; its remains are highly concentrated in the clay sediments of what was once a large pond. The animals probably died there of natural causes.

The site museum is an annex of the Museo Numantino in Soria. The museum buildings display numerous remains of elephants and other animals, such as aurochs, horses and rhinoceroses, alongside Acheulean handaxes and cleavers.
