About the museum
The Museo Diocesano de Arte Antiguo occupies a 16th-century small palace known as the former Casa de los Barrena, which belonged to the Gamboa family until 1923. During the 20th century it was a hotel, a tenement house and a bank branch. In 1956 the bishop of the diocese bought the building to turn it into a museum, and on 11 May 1968 it was inaugurated in the presence of the papal nuncio Luigi Dadaglio.
At first the exhibition was limited to the ground floor; in 1972 it was extended to part of the first floor, and today the whole building is dedicated to the museum. The subsequent rehabilitation renewed the facilities with current display technology and is particularly notable for the inner courtyard and the recovery of a stretch of medieval city wall.
The holdings come from the Church's work of gathering its heritage, which began in 1949, when the pieces were deposited and displayed in the cathedral. Behind the discreet façade is an important collection of religious art from the 12th to the 20th century, as well as collections of archaeology and textiles and some manuscripts.
