Centro de Interpretación de la Historia de Ubrique "San Juan de Letrán"

Interpretation centre in the octagonal hermitage of San Juan de Letrán that reviews the history of Ubrique from the Palaeolithic to the Second Republic.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The centre opened on 9 March 2009 in the hermitage of San Juan de Letrán, an octagonal building at the entrance to the historic centre of Ubrique. Its façade follows the model of the church of Sant'Andrea in Mantua, by Leon Battista Alberti, and the centre's own website states that it is the only Spanish church that reproduces that design. The adaptation project was directed by the municipal urban planning office within the Cultur Cad programme.

The visit tells the story of the town through large books that narrate its past and present, from the hunter-gatherer groups of the Palaeolithic to the Second Republic. Topics include the leather industry and leather goods (marroquinería), the crujía de gamones, the Carnival, local customs, bullfighting and popular religious devotion, as well as a broad library on traditional festivals.

The centre is two minutes from the Museo de la Piel (Leather Museum) and close to the Peñón de la Becerra. Admission also includes the permanent exhibition “Manos y Magia en la Piel”.
