About the museum

The Museo de la Piel de Ubrique is housed in the former Convento de Capuchinos (Capuchin convent), a 17th-century building next to the town's former tanneries, where hides were tanned. The convent also keeps the memory of Fray Diego José de Cádiz, and his cell forms part of the route.

The idea for the museum came from Maribel Lobato, who for twelve years gathered materials discarded by the leather goods industry, together with donations from firms in the sector. The project grew out of the exhibition “Manos y Magia en la Piel”, which was successfully shown in several editions inside and outside Ubrique. For the last one, in 2008, Paco Solano, a worker with long experience in the trade, joined the project. The collection continues to grow through acquisitions and donations from residents.

The holdings consist of machines, tools and pieces made in Ubrique throughout its history, and the museum's narrative is based on real objects and verified documentation. The exhibition occupies the former cells on the upper floor and the cloister, where modern and old machines can be seen. It traces the history of leather from the “precisos” to today's designs, pays tribute to all the trades in the chain (cutters, petaqueros, seamstresses, die-cutters, embossers and travelling salesmen), and ends in a small workshop set up as in former times. Access to the permanent exhibition is only by guided visit.
