About the museum
The Centro de Visitantes de Laujar de Andarax is one of the public-use facilities of the Sierra Nevada Natural Area, which brings together the National Park and the Natural Park. It lies in the Almería Alpujarra, one kilometre from Laujar and beside the Andarax river, and serves as an information and orientation point for those who want to walk the trails and get to know the mountains.
Its exhibition revolves around water: the mountain range's river network, the water cycle and the traditional irrigation systems of Andalusí origin, such as the acequias de careo (traditional irrigation channels). It also explains the geological history of Sierra Nevada, the landscapes at different altitudes, the mining wealth with a display of minerals, the endemic species and the historical heritage left by the Andalusí, Roman and Castilian peoples.
In March 2026 the building was refurbished with funding from European recovery funds. The work improved accessibility, renewed the panels and added multimedia resources and models. The interior spaces can be adapted for projections, workshops and exhibitions, and outside, a seating area and a pergola were added for educational activities.
