About the museum

Gibralfaro Castle overlooks the city of Málaga from the top of a hill, 132 metres above sea level. It was built in the 14th century, in the time of Yusuf I, and was completed by his son Muhammad V. After the Castilian conquest the mosque was consecrated as a church, and the fortress served as a barracks and prison until 1925, when it passed to the town council and acquired public use. The French blew up part of its fortifications when they withdrew during the Peninsular War; in 1977 the military buildings were demolished, and between 1989 and 1999 it was restored in three phases.

The interpretation centre occupies the former powder magazine and has been operating since 29 July 1998. It presents the life of the castle as a military garrison and coastal lookout between 1487 and 1925, within the history of the city.

The visit begins with a large model of Muslim Málaga on a plan of the present city. Military uniforms arranged by century are displayed in showcases, along with furniture, weapons, documents, engravings and plans; some weapons are on loan from the Museo del Ejército (Army Museum). The 18th century has particular weight, with the lookout and cartographer Joseph Carrión de Mula, author of the 1791 plan, and a didactic model of the corvette San Telmo. The central room displays navigation instruments, lead soldiers, miniatures of the Regimiento Fijo de Málaga wearing the uniform of 1805, and reproductions of playing cards.
